BLACK OUT THE SUN Both of us looking at the stairwell Numbed by the fact, the only way was down Teetering, waiting for the starters gun A silencer fired, it couldn't get any quieter Tumbling, no one stood tall, no one at all Side by side, one last time we took a fall If there's such a thing as negative equality The flower petals fell softly on not to be There is not enough evidence to convict I plainly chose to take the blame Love is not a game to be contested by one dark enough to black out the sun Science and passion have little in common I beg to differ, mathematics are always in play Percentages cannot be denied, law of averages Most lovers come to visit, some come to stay Strength is not found in muscle, but elasticity To bounce back stronger, roll with the punches Regardless of the odds, Gods of wisdom fortell I may have succumbed, but idle not, i went with my hunches There is not enough evidence to convict I plainly chose to take the blame Love is not a game to be contested by one Dark enough to black out the sun Venturing onward, i ask of you this How many lips ... kiss ... in a total eclipse

Two Dreamers 04:26
TWO DREAMERS. Ritt she was the girl with no name, she lived far off in the distance everyday right around noon, you could see if only for an instance a bouncing billy goat and she, outlining the mid-day moon from a field of lilies and daffodils, I wondered if they ever noticed me Diane Sometimes when I’m out walking, Most often happens round midday I hear a kind of drawlin talking, Faintly like it’s far away It floats on the breeze, teasing the poppies, And making them sway And Billy strokes his pointy beard, The way he does when he can’t figure it And says to me, “what’s that I hear?”, And I say “Billy, don’t act the goat You know it’s only Ritt!” Ritt then one day while i was humming a mindless melody, the kind infants are fond of i saw the billy prick his ears, with it's head gently give the girl a rub yes you silly goat i can hear, it's the song of the soft and wild plains in a picture book, a book of pictures, a boy and his vivid dreams a girl and her billy prancing, forever implanted between the seams dancing figurines, animated fixtures Diane Enchanting pictures, dancing tambourines Entrancing and igniting the trail of white moonbeams Lighting up the milky way, With silky secret soulful sounds of oh so far away The girl, a whirling dervish, Turning round and around And around and around, And around And the drums pound, And the tambourines jingle their joy-telling bells Sonorific symbols in a symphonetic swell And all is thunderfully wonderously well Ritt our slice of earth, spinning, lifting beyond the retinal scope of pain into unknown space handsomely drifting yet more is awarded than greets the eye a fingertip universe, opportunities limitless so many directions without an end the spirit flies, the spirit soars and what's more, what's even more amidst all the voices, amidst all the choices i have found , a life long friend Diane the spirit soars, the spirit flies the muse has blessed, with feeling eyes two dreamers, in a stream of coinciding consciousness gliding on a friendship, sailing through the sea of rhyme until the end of time

Love Nerve 03:00
LOVE NERVE Forgive me for asking, am I trespassing Crossed a border, gone past where I oughta Some invisible line, completely unrehearsed Have I touched upon, the love nerve? Have I found the love nerve? I know we promised, to keep things casual To not pay homage, to our mothers manual Steady as frozen water, a motionless still frame We would flow, no quarters drawn, no need to give it a name Have I found the love nerve? Nature has other ideas, time measured in changing gears At the risk of, all being lost, love's progress cannot be paused What I'm trying to say, is either we is or we ain't I need to know today, is what tomorrow will taint Have I found the love nerve?

CEMENT SHOES on the bottom of many a river lie corpses that refuse to float on the bottom of many a river lie corpses that refuse to float concrete is cheaper than horses and it doesn't rock the boat if you wake up wearing cement shoes brother you got them unfixable blues if you wake up wearing cement shoes brother you got them unfixable blues Houdini couldn't break you lose guess you shoulda paid your dues cement shoes nobody is paying to drain the pond (that's just something they're fond of saying) cement shoes you know you should have quit before they measured you for the perfect fit it was just a game of three card monti suckers play, I've seen it all before it was just a game of three card monti suckers play, I've seen it all before the switcheroo and the snatch I saw the catch, and played to the draw but little did I know, but little did I know, the queen had vacated the scene a long, long, time ago cement shoes nobody is paying to drain the pond (that's just something they're fond of saying) cement shoes you know you should have quit before they measured you for the perfect fit no matter the truth no matter what you believe no matter the truth no matter what you believe there just no way you can call a liar a thief next time you hear someone say come in the water is fine next time you hear someone say come in the water is fine take the time to think it over there's a good chance they're lying

HEAVEN WITH YOU seven times eleven will always equal seventy seven but one plus one doesn't always egual two maybe that's the trick to finding heaven with you looking beyond the horizon to the great expance to discover a liason on solid ground above the clouds to romance my lover, to leave behind all doubts the street lights are a golden amber the sidewalk sways beneath our feet a light rain descreetly pampers gently saturating passions heat a time to reminisce, to basque in delight let the mathematicians analyze I'd rather be paralyzed in love seven times eleven will always equal seventy seven but one plus one doesn't always egual two maybe that's the trick to finding heaven with you

PASTEL COLOURED WATERS as a vision upon pastel colored waters creates a passageway for the flight of our dreams along the jetted scales as twilight accents the closeness of the heavens like a prayer being answered the flamingos in unison spread their awesome wings

HERATBREAK IS A BREEZE heartbreak is a breeze the trick to it is this you have to know how to please the lonely self you're with don't dwell on the negative go out and learn something new everything is relative it depends on your point of view the problem with fixing loneliness is just when you're getting it right you might meet someone in the same shape you're in it's a crying shame, you just can't win next thing you know you'll be going out to shows and just to be completely unfair people will say, you make quite a pair your whole life turned upside down heads over heels I don't want to sound, like a sad faced clown but I was starting to like the way loneliness feels the problem with fixing loneliness is just when you're beginning to get it right you might meet someone in the same shape you're in and it's a crying shame, you just can't win am I setting myself up for heartbreak can I take the pain and the ache....again am I setting myself up for heartbreak can I take the pain ….. again heartbreak is a breeze the trick to it is this you have to know how to please the lonely self you're with

SCREAMING INTO THE VOID the woods are filled with buzzing creatures the night is dark no city lights high shrill like a walk of some zombies feature the trees are inhabited by fright i'm thinking, sweating, what if they swarm attack with malice an ugly thought, wrapped in abhorrent scorn yet in it's own way fabulous arms flailing to no avail screaming into the void are my assailants mindless or were they annoyed? screaming into the void screaming into the void screaming into the void but no they stay in their cocoons howling at the moon the echo of every lost love, that's ever been the artful choir of misplaced beginnings i'm back on my balcony now there's rain in a cloudless sky below they scurry in their hurry while I'm left to wonder why screaming into the void screaming into the void screaming into the void

WEATHER THE STORM slowly the sun lingers longer hovering on the horizon with each day a little stronger still there's remnants of the frost the cold wind battles the sun over the passion we have lost, the emotions that covered us while we waited for springs thaw the electricity, the spark of love flaming the never ending need for more more of what we came here for dreams shared, veins pumping heat while outside the snow fell in sheets if we can weather the storm imagine when it's warm and our hearts are free if we can weather the storm imagine when it's warm and our hearts are free how strong our love will be

about

Until his untimely death in April 2013, Richard Blum (Ritt) was a wonderfully talented NY poet, lyricist, free thinker, artist, wit, and one-time yellow cab driver, who kindly let this ageing Brit mess about with his words. He collaborated on music projects with dozens of people, and hence touched many lives - what you'll find here is a sprinkling of the many songs Ritt and I did together on the Songramp site between 2005 & 2013.

Tony Charnock, 2013

P.S. In addition to this tiny selection, there's a full on tribute album from scores of his friends -
